US Department of Justice Wednesday assigned former FBI director Robert Mueller as Special Prosecutor to investigate Russia's involvement in the 2016 US presidential election and possibly allegations of collusion with President Trump's campaign.

After the announcement by the Justice Department, Trump said in a statement that he expected the incident to be resolved quickly.

"As I have said many times, a thorough investigation will confirm that we have always known that my camp is not in collusion with any foreign entity," he said.

"I assume this responsibility and will do my best to fulfill it," Muller said in a statement to CBS News Tweets.

"I made a decision to make a special prosecutor," he said in a statement announcing the appointment of a special prosecutor, "said Rod Rosenstein, deputy head of the Ministry of Justice, who said that he did not find a criminal offense and was not sure about the prosecution.

"I think it is necessary to appoint a special prosecutor in order to give the American people full confidence in the findings."

** Congressional investigation will continue **

US lawmakers welcomed the decision of the Justice Department, but the House and Senate Republican leaders said Congress itself would continue to push for a survey on Russia.
