Olaf Scholz, the German finance minister, said he firmly believes that most Italians have a “very pro-European position” and that the euro zone is currently stable. In recent years, it has also prepared better in order to cope with the predicament.
The political crisis in Italy has made financial markets uneasy. When asked about the situation in Italy, Scholz told Reuters that the eurozone countries have been working hard to make the region more stable in recent years.
"The EU is very stable at present and the euro zone is the same," he said in an interview on Wednesday.
"It can be said that Europe is now better prepared to cope with the difficulties than ever. Moreover, I firmly believe that most Italians have a very pro-European position. This is a European country."
Scholz was asked if he was worried about the market shock and said: "The current economic situation in Europe is good."
As for the euro, he added: "What we have seen in the past few years is that the euro is a stable currency, and it is completely unreasonable for the speculation of the currency. It is normal to go up and down without further debate."
