NEW YORK, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Before the 2016 U.S. election, President Trump was asked to arrange for payments to two women claiming to have an affair as a cover, former private lawyer Michael Cohen testified on Tuesday.
Cohen, 51, made a statement in Manhattan's federal court and pleaded guilty to eight counts, including tax evasion, bank fraud and campaign finance violations.
Cohen did not name himself in court, but his lawyer, Lanny Davis, said afterwards that he was referring to the president himself.
"Today he stood up to testify, and Trump instructed him to commit a crime by paying two women, mainly to influence an election," Davis said in a statement after Cohen pleaded guilty.
"If the money is a crime for Cohen, why is it not a crime for Trump?" He said.
The two payments were made to silence two women who claimed to have been involved with Trump and were paid before the 2016 presidential election. It was 130 thousand dollars and three Stormy Daniels. The other is $150 thousand, involving the former Playboy model Karen McDougal.
