After Mexico and the United States announced a bilateral trade agreement on Monday, Canada rejoined the negotiations to modernize the 24-year-old NAFTA.
"They (Canada) want to join the agreement, and we've given a deadline of Friday, and I think we're moving forward in a step-by-step manner. We'll sit back and see what's going on, but in any case it's going very well, "U.S. President Trump told reporters outside the White House.
This positive argument contrasts with Trump's harsh accusations against Canada in recent weeks. He attacked Canada's high dairy tariffs on twitter, calling it "killing American agriculture!"
Trudeau said he thought he could catch up with Friday's deadline.
"We think it's possible to do this by Friday, but it's only possible because it depends on whether we finally reach a deal that's good for Canada," he said at a news conference Wednesday. "There is no agreement to achieve a bad NAFTA agreement."
Trump has set a deadline of Friday for the three countries to reach an agreement in principle that Mexican President Penia can sign before he leaves office at the end of November. According to American law, Trump Sh waited for 90 days before he could sign the agreement.
