U.S. President Trump said Friday that the U.S. and Japan have begun negotiations on trade, saying Tokyo "understands (if there is no agreement) will be a big problem."
"We've already started," Trump told reporters on Air Force One. "In fact, the Japanese have called... they came last week."
"If we do not reach an agreement with Japan, Japan knows it will be a big problem," he added.
Trump later said in a speech at Sioux Falls, South Dakota: "For the first time, India called us a few days ago to express its wish to start discussing trade agreements."
Trump has challenged China, Mexico, Canada and the European Union on trade issues, and expressed dissatisfaction with Japan's huge trade deficit, but has not asked Japan to take concrete measures to address trade imbalances.
