Job vacancies rose to record highs in July, with more Americans leaving voluntarily, indicating a strong labor market and confidence that a better market will soon stimulate faster wage growth.
Job vacancies and labor mobility surveys (JOLTS) released by the U.S. Department of Labor on Tuesday showed further tightening of the labor market in July, making it increasingly difficult for employers to find suitable employees.
Although tightening labor markets may stimulate wage growth, some analysts warn that labor shortages will have a negative impact on economic growth in the future. The JOLTS report reinforces expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates at its policy meeting on September 25-26. The Fed has raised interest rates for the two time this year.
"Economic expansion contradicts labor shortage," said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at Mitsubishi UFG in New York. "No worker, no increase, it's as simple as that."
