Eleven Republican and Democratic senators called on the Trump administration to "use all means", including further economic sanctions, to ensure that two Reuters journalists imprisoned by the Burmese government were "released unconditionally and immediately".
Senators headed by Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Jeff Merkley wrote to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, according to what Reuters saw on Tuesday. "We are writing today about the case of two Reuters journalists, Wa Long and Kyaw Soe Oo, who were improperly detained and sentenced to seven years in Burma. It expresses great concern. " Rubio and Merkley are both members of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.
Two Reuters reporters were sentenced earlier this month to seven years in prison for violating the State Secrets Act, a case seen as an indicator of the democratic process in Myanmar.
The incident began in August 2017 when Muslim rebels in Rohingya attacked government security forces in Rakhine State in Western Myanmar, and the government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi swept them away on security grounds, gradually raising diplomatic pressure on them.
The two Reuters reporters were arrested last December while they were investigating the killing of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims by security forces. All two reporters insisted on their innocence.
News of the imprisonment of the two journalists sparked a sea of international solidarity, including calls for their release by Vice President Burns.
Senators said they appreciated Pompeio's mention of the incident to Burma's Foreign Minister Kyaw Tin in August and called for the immediate release of the two men, but further action should be taken.
