The Wall Street Journal on Sunday quoted Chinese officials as saying the Chinese government might be reluctant to participate in Sino-US trade talks later this month if Trump's government insisted on imposing additional tariffs on Chinese goods.
The Wall Street Journal says the United States has invited China to negotiate, but is also pushing ahead with plans to impose tariffs on about $200 billion of Chinese products.
The report quoted a high-ranking Chinese official as saying that China would never negotiate with a gun against its head.
Other officials advising leaders also suggested that the Chinese government should restrict the sale of parts and components needed by U.S. companies and threaten the U.S. supply chain through "export restrictions".
The latest Sino-US trade talks, proposed by Steven Mnuchin, the US Treasury secretary, will be held around September 20.
Although the Chinese side has begun to discuss the participation plan, the Chinese side has also begun to reconsider whether to participate in the negotiations because the US may announce new tariff actions this week.
