Under the government's order, India's imposition of tariffs on some US imports will be postponed until November 2, the second retaliatory measure by the Indian government to postpone the imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to the United States.
The trade divide between India and the United States has intensified since President Trump took office, but India has decided to further postpone tariffs because the two countries are now negotiating a package to defuse trade frictions on some projects.
The United States refused to include India on the new list of steel and aluminium tariff exemptions, and India decided in June to raise import taxes on some U.S. products, including almonds, walnuts and apples, starting on August 4. The Indian government later extended the start date of the tariff increase to September 18, but decided to postpone it again as negotiations continued.
