A senior U.S. Treasury official said Monday that the United States remains concerned about the recent depreciation of the Chinese yuan. He added that it was not clear whether U.S. Treasury Secretary Noochin would meet with Chinese officials at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meetings this week.
"Of course, on the issue of the RMB exchange rate, we will continue to pay close attention to the trend of the RMB, and we are still worried about the recent depreciation of the RMB," the official told reporters on a conference call. "More broadly, we are abandoning more market-oriented policies for China and continue to rely on macroeconomic influences. The non market mechanism of the economic and trade environment is very concerned. "
The official said the concerns would be raised in the Treasury's semi-annual monetary report, due to be released next week. But he refused to disclose any details of the report.
The finance ministry official said Noochin had no arrangements to meet with Chinese officials at the IMF and the World Bank in Bali, the Indonesian resort. However, his schedule has not yet been finalized.
The official said that China's Vice Premier Liu He would not attend the IMF and World Bank annual meetings, so it is unlikely to have trade discussions.
