U.S. President Trump vowed on Monday to begin cutting millions of dollars in U.S. aid to three Central American countries, and said large numbers of immigrants from these countries are heading to the United States to put the country in a state of emergency. Trump sought to raise Republican opportunities for midterm elections in November 6th.
"Guatemala (Guatemala), Honduras and El Salvador cannot prevent people from leaving their homeland for the United States illegally. Now we have to start cutting off, or substantially reducing the large number of foreign aid routinely given to them. " Trump wrote in a series of tweets.
These migrants, estimated to be 7,000-10,000 Central Americans fleeing violence and poverty in their homes, are now moving slowly across the U.S. border in southern Mexico.
Before the mid-term elections, Trump and Republican colleagues tried to make immigration a campaign topic. The Republicans are trying to maintain control over both houses of Congress.
Trump's comments also seem to pressure Mexico to stop those immigrants. He complained that the Mexico police and the military failed to stop those people from going to the United States.
Rep. Nita Lowey, a Democrat, said Trump threatened to cut foreign aid, in doing so "ignoring one thing: the Constitution delegates the power to use money to Congress, not the president." Lowey said Congress's assistance to Central American countries is to solve the fundamental reason why people want to leave their homes.
"The reduction of gold aid will exacerbate the problem rather than improve it." Lowey said in a statement.
