After meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said the United States will continue to push for withdrawal from the medium-range nuclear missile treaty, even if Russia and some European countries object.
During the 90-minute meeting between Bolton and Putin, the two sides agreed to meet Putin and U.S. President Trump in Paris next month for the first time since the Helsinki summit in July.
But the talks in Moscow failed to break through the resolve to abolish Trump's withdrawal from the China Direction Treaty, which Moscow and many European countries considered a dangerous move and warned of a possible Cold War-like arms race.
"New strategic realities are emerging," Bolton said at a news conference, adding that the Cold War treaty was redundant because it failed to address the new missile threat from China, Iran and North Korea.
"Notices of formal withdrawal have not yet been issued, but will be given in due course," he said, adding that the process could take months.
Moscow warned Washington that if Trump's threat to withdraw from the China Direction Treaty was put into practice, Russia would be forced to respond to maintain a military balance.
"The problem is that Russia is now in violation of the central treaty in Europe," Burton told reporters. Russia denies this accusation.
