Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday that Saudi Arabia would not have murdered Jamal Khashoggi without U.S. protection, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran's news agency (IRNA).
"In today's world, in a new century like this, no one can imagine that we would see such an organized murder and a system of such a heinous murder," IRNA quoted Rouhani as saying.
"I think no country would dare to commit such a crime without the protection of the United States."
Iran and Saudi Arabia are old rivals in the Middle East, supporting rival factions in the Syrian-Yemeni conflict and in political disputes in Iraq and Lebanon.
In addition, IRIB news agency reported that Rouhani said Iran would "smash" the latest U. S. sanctions against its oil industry.
Washington plans to impose sanctions on Iran from November 4, aimed at stopping Iran from interfering in the Syrian-Iraqi conflict and forcing Tehran to resume negotiations on its ballistic missile program.
