Trump said on Twitter that trade talks with China were "going smoothly" after the two had "very good" telephone discussions. Trump plans to meet with Xi Jinping during the summit of the group of 20 leaders (G20).
Xinhua quoted Xi Jinping as saying that both China and Trump "have good aspirations for the healthy and stable development of Sino-US relations and the expansion of Sino-US economic and trade cooperation, and we should strive to turn this aspiration into reality."
"There is also a successful precedent for China and the United States to solve economic and trade problems through coordination and cooperation. The economic teams of the two countries should strengthen contacts, conduct consultations on issues of concern to both sides, and promote Sino-US economic and trade issues to reach a mutually acceptable solution.
Xinhua reported that Xi Jinping pointed out that the essence of Sino US economic and trade cooperation is mutual benefit and win-win situation. Over the past period, there have been some differences in the economic and trade fields between China and the United States. The related industries and Global trade of the two countries have been adversely affected, which China does not want to see.
Neither leader disclosed any details of possible progress in the first direct discussion in months. U.S. government officials have said that trade talks with China cannot resume until Beijing takes concrete actions that it is willing to take to meet U.S. demands.
The two countries have imposed tariffs on each other's hundreds of billions of dollars in goods, and Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on the rest of China's more than $500 billion in U.S. exports if the dispute cannot be resolved.
But after talking to Xi Jinping, Trump made more optimistic remarks on twitter.
