Two sources said Tuesday that the U.S. government is considering issuing new travel warnings to U.S. citizens, including corporate executives, after Canada arrested the chief financial officer of China Huawei Technologies Ltd. at the request of the U.S. government.
According to a person familiar with the matter, the State Department's proposal will warn American citizens that China may retaliate against the arrest of Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer.
Meng Wanzhou, 46, who was arrested in Vancouver on December 1, appeared again on bail on Tuesday in an attempt to avoid U.S. extradition requests. China has protested to the US and Canadian authorities over the arrest of Bangladesh's late boat.
The court documents said that the United States accused Meng of misleading multinational banks about the control of Huawei's Iranian operating company. These banks therefore run the risk of violating U.S. sanctions against Iraq and may be punished.
Canada confirmed Tuesday that a citizen of the country was detained in China, but said it did not see a clear link between the incident and the Huawei case.
In a recent travel safety reminder issued on January 22, the State Council urged American citizens to "heighten their vigilance" in China because of "the enforcement of local laws and special restrictions on people with dual U.S. and Chinese identities."
