After listening to a briefing on Sino-US trade the night before, an automotive industry executive said White House officials told automakers that the U.S. government believed China would reduce import tariffs on U.S. automobiles from the current 40% to 15%.
The executive told Reuters that the United States had not received any official documents on China's move. On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Vice Premier Liu He of the State Council told U.S. Trade Representative Lettershire and U.S. Treasury Secretary Nuchin that China would cut tariffs on automobiles to 15 percent.
Earlier this year, China raised tariffs on American automobiles and parts to 40%, after the United States raised tariffs on Chinese automobiles and parts to 27.5%.
