Michael Cohen, a former private lawyer for US President Trump, was sentenced to three years in prison Wednesday on charges of breaching election laws and paying seal fees to two women before the 2016 election, as well as financial wrongdoing. This has brought legal and political risks to Trump.
In Manhattan court, Cohen told U.S. District Judge William Pauley that he had covered up some "dirty things" for Trump out of "foolish loyalty". Pauley's sentence for Cohen was lighter under four to five years of federal law, but it still highlighted the seriousness of the charges, which could affect the president himself.
Cohen had a shocking reversal in the case, and the lawyer had said he wanted to "block bullets" for Trump. When he pleaded guilty in August, Trump instructed him to pay a sealing fee to two women, Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model, and Stormy Daniels, an adult movie star. Trump denied having an affair with the two men, and did not admit having anything to do with the sealing fee.
For Trump, there is another situation to worry about. The prosecution announced that the publisher of the tabloid National Enquirer had reached an agreement with them to protect the publisher from being charged for participating in McDougal's payment of sealing fees. McDougal claims to have had a relationship with Trump between 2006 and 2007.
As part of the agreement, publisher American Media Inc. (AMI) acknowledged that it had "cooperated" with Trump's presidential campaign by paying McDougal $150,000 and agreed to work with prosecutors.
