Nikkei News reported Thursday that Softbank Group of Japan (9984.T) plans to replace Huawei [HWT.UL] devices in the 4G network with hardware devices from Nokia (NOKIA.HE) and Ericsson (ERICb.ST). The report did not indicate the source of the information.
At present, the United States and its allies are stepping up their scrutiny of Chinese technology companies for fear of their relationship with the Chinese government and of spying on the government.
Nikkei said that Softbank's 5G network will also use the equipment of the two companies, rather than Huawei's.
A Softbank spokesman said the report was "based on speculation and has not yet made a decision".
Nokia and Ericsson were originally important suppliers of Softbank.
Softbank has also had the longest business relationship with Huawei among Japan's three major telecom operators, although Softbank has previously said it uses "relatively few" equipment from Chinese manufacturers.
Earlier, industry sources said that replacing 4G devices could be time-consuming and costly, and Nikkei reported that it would take several years to complete.
