On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives nearly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Burmese government to release two Reuters journalists, Wa Long and Kyaw Soe Oo, who were jailed a year ago. The case is seen as a landmark case of freedom of expression.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the resolution by 394 votes to 1, calling for the release of Wa Long, 32, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, who were sentenced to seven years in September last year for violating Myanmar's state secrets law. The case raises questions about Myanmar's democratic process from American and European political leaders, human rights activists and the United Nations.
The resolution is a non-binding resolution, but it sends a strong message to the Myanmar Government and the Trump Government of the United States that the members of the United States Congress are demanding the release of the two journalists.
The Burmese Embassy in the United States did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the House vote.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
