A source said Friday that Thoma Bravo LLC, a private equity firm, is in preliminary negotiations to acquire McAfee, a security software company, with TPG Capital and Intel (INTC.O).
Sources said that the relevant negotiations are at an initial stage and there is no guarantee that an agreement will be reached. CNBC reported on the negotiations earlier.
Intel and TPG Capital declined to comment, and Thoma Bravo did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Intel acquired California-based McAfee for $7.7 billion in 2011, sold 51% of McAfee to TPG capital last year, and priced the company at $4.2 billion.
Thoma Bravo has been seeking to quickly integrate the cyber security industry.
