Hours later, Peter Navarro, the head of the National Trade Commission, stepped up his criticism, saying that the Fed was "insane" to signal that it would continue to raise interest rates next year, as it did in September.
"The Fed shouldn't raise interest rates Wednesday, not because the economy is slowing down, but because economic growth has not stimulated inflation," Navarro told CNBC television. "I think the Fed should simply do what it says, that is, look at the data... not just say you're going to raise interest rates three times next year - that's crazy. Look at the data!
Investors are betting heavily that the Fed will raise interest rates after Wednesday's two-day policy meeting, as it promises to gradually raise rates to neutral levels to prevent overheating.
Many economists also expect the Fed to continue to raise interest rates next year, although the pace will slow in the event of a possible recession.
Trump frequently and loudly criticized the Fed and Fed Chairman Powell for raising interest rates this year, especially at a time when stock market turmoil and U.S. Treasury yields are beginning to show signs of a possible recession in the near future.
In an interview with Reuters last week, Trump said he needed flexibility to cut interest rates to support the broader U.S. economy as he fought an increasingly fierce trade war with China and possibly other countries.
