A U.S. judge on Tuesday severely criticized former U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Flynn for lying to FBI agents in a "Russian Gate" investigation into the 2016 U.S. election and for not sentencing Flynn until he completes assisting prosecutors.
Emmet Sullivan, a U.S. magistrate, told Flynn that he had become a traitor. The judge also pointed out that Flynn secretly acted as a Turkish lobbyist even while serving on Trump's campaign team and preparing to serve as Trump's national security adviser. Flynn is a retired army lieutenant general and former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.
Flynn admitted lying to FBI investigators about talking with Sergei Kislyak, then Russian ambassador to the United States, about the sanctions imposed on Russia by former President Barack Obama in December 2016, after Trump's victory and before his official inauguration.
Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor who investigates a possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia before the election, has asked the judge not to jail Flynn, who has provided "a lot of" cooperation in numerous interrogations.
But Sullivan sternly told Flynn that his behavior was abhorrent, pointing out that Flynn also lied to senior White House officials, which led to the latter misleading the public. The judge said he had read other unpublished information about Flynn's actions.
Sullivan once asked the prosecutor whether Flynn should have been charged with treason; however, he later said that he did not imply that the charges should have been brought.
"The evidence shows that you sold your country," Sullivan told Flynn. "I don't hide my disgust. I despise this crime."
