With the partial closure of the U.S. government entering its sixth day, the agency responsible for managing federal agency staff advised about 800,000 employees who might be affected by a pay cut on how to defer debt repayments.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) recommends that staff on compulsory vacations be able to pay off their mortgages in less than full, and posts on its website format letters that they may use.
"I'm a federal employee who was recently forced to take a vacation because of a lack of money in my organization," one of the three letter samples wrote. "As a result, my income has decreased dramatically and I can't repay my mortgage in full without paying other expenses."
