The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives met only a few minutes later Thursday, but did not take steps to end some of the federal closures. Congress will then adjourn until next week.
The government was partially closed for the sixth day, but neither the Senate nor the House of Representatives showed a sense of urgency and took no measures to restore funding for about 20% of the affected government projects.
This situation will continue until next week, possibly until January.
President Trump's request for US taxpayers to provide US$5 billion for the construction of the US-Mexico border wall was opposed by Democrats and some Republican lawmakers, which led to the closure of some US governments.
Trump called for the border wall funds to be included in the spending programs Congress must pass to restore funding to several government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Commerce.
When the funds of the above-mentioned institutions ran out on Saturday, the "unnecessary" departments were closed. This is the third time this year that the U.S. government has closed its doors, both of which were temporary.
"The President has made it clear that any bill that allocates funds to government agencies must provide adequate funding for border security," White House spokesman Sanders said in a statement, but did not mention the border wall proposed by Trump.
So far, the U.S. government shutdown has had limited impact, in part because about 800,000 federal workers affected are on vacation. But things may change soon.
