U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that the United States hopes Russia will explain the detention of former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan and immediately ask Russia to release him once it is determined that the detention is improper. Whelan was detained in Moscow on charges of Russian espionage.
The U.S. State Department said that Ambassador Huntsman visited Whelan in Moscow's detention center and spoke to his family by telephone. In a statement, a State Department spokesman said the United States had expressed concern about delays in visiting Whelan through diplomatic channels. Whelan was detained on Friday.
"We have clearly expressed our expectations to Russia, and we hope to learn more about the charges and what kind of charges he is facing. If there is no justification for his detention, we will demand immediate release," Pompeo said in Brasilia. He attended the inauguration ceremony of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in Brasilia on Tuesday.
The Russian Federal Security Agency (FSB) has initiated a criminal investigation into Whelan, but has not provided details about his suspected espionage activities. According to Russian law, the crime of espionage can be sentenced to 10-20 years'imprisonment.
Whelan's family said Tuesday that he went to Russia to attend the wedding of a former Marine, accused the spies of innocence, and said he was missing at a wedding banquet at the Moscow Metropolitan Hotel.
