Thailand's first tropical storm in 30 years is expected to land on Friday evening, bringing storms up to 80 kilometers per hour. Thousands of people have taken refuge inland and two major airports have been closed.
The storm that followed tropical storm Pabuk set off strong winds and waves in the Gulf of Thailand before landing at Lokun House in the south.
Meteorological officials warned of possible heavy rains and storms in 15 southern provinces, which are home to some of the world's largest natural rubber plantations and several islands that are popular tourist destinations.
"Strong winds are expected to set off waves 3-5 meters high in the Gulf of Thailand and 2-3 meters high in the Andaman Sea. All ships should go ashore, "the Thai Meteorological Ministry said in a statement earlier on Friday.
The statement said the situation would continue until Saturday.
