The ultimate goal of the United States seeking to reduce its trade deficit with China, prevent intellectual property theft and create a more level playing field for U.S. exporters or companies wishing to operate in China is difficult to achieve, which means any agreement to suspend tariffs could eventually break down, Amben Standards said on Friday.
In his comments, Jeremy Lawson, chief economist of ABS Investment, pointed out that the next stage of talks between China and the United States is likely to reach a concrete agreement on extending the cease-fire period and avoid further tariff increases this year. However, the U.S. Trade Representative has indicated that any agreement also needs to include a "comprehensive implementation plan that needs to be continuously verified and effectively implemented", and that such monitoring and enforcement systems are difficult to guide and maintain in reality and politics.
