A Chinese Court on Monday sentenced a Canadian man, Robert Schellenberg, to death for drug smuggling. Shellenberg's lawyer said Tuesday that Shellenberg would appeal the verdict, arguing that the court should not increase the penalty because no new evidence was introduced during the retrial.
This has exacerbated the tension in Sino-Canadian relations. Sino-Canadian relations have been tense since Canadian police arrested Ben Wanzhou, Chief Financial Officer of Huawei Technologies Ltd. at the request of the US in early December.
Shellenberg was first tried by Dalian Intermediate People's Court for smuggling 222 kilograms of methamphetamine and sentenced to 15 years'imprisonment. Shellenberg refused to appeal. After retrial, the court sentenced the death penalty.
Schellenberg is the third Canadian to violate Chinese law after Meng's arrest in Canada.
The other two Canadians, former diplomat Michael Kovrig and business adviser Michael Spavor, were detained for endangering national security.
China has not linked the three Canadian detentions to Meng's arrest.
Shellenberg's lawyer, Zhang Dongshuo, said Shellenberg's defense focused on insufficient evidence that he was involved in drug trafficking or methamphetamine smuggling.
Zhang Dongshuo told Reuters that even if the court accepts all charges, it should not impose heavier sentences on him, because the new evidence presented by the prosecution has actually been submitted to the court.
