The U.S. government has partially stalled for 26 days, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged President Trump on Wednesday to reschedule his State of the Union address so that Trump may not have the opportunity to get angry with Democrats about the current impasse when he speaks in the House of Representatives.
Trump is scheduled to speak on Jan. 29, but Pelosi wrote to him about security problems because the U.S. Secret Service, which is responsible for securing the speech, was underfunded during a partial government shutdown.
The deadlock was triggered by Trump's request for funding for his promised U.S. -Mexico border wall-building program, which Congressional Democrats opposed.
The President of the United States usually addresses the joint session of the two chambers of Congress and the majority of the cabinet members in the House of Representatives hall, setting out government goals for the coming year.
Speaking to reporters, Pelosi hinted that if Trump did not agree to reschedule his speech until the government returned to business, he might be able to speak in the Oval Office, but not as grandly as he did in Congress.
The White House did not immediately comment on Pelosi's request, and her letter seemed to have caught aides off guard. The letter pointed out that she invited Trump to address Congress in his State of the Union address, but said the suspension complicates the situation.
