Driven by a surge in new orders, manufacturing activity in the central Atlantic coast rebounded in January from a two-and-a-half-year low, which may ease fears of a sharp slowdown in manufacturing production.
Although data so far show that the U.S. economy is in relatively good shape, there are concerns that continued partial shutdowns by the federal government may undermine business and consumer confidence and lead to spending cuts.
The Labor Department said Thursday that as of the week ending January 12, the number of new claims for unemployment benefits had been seasonally adjusted to fall by 3,000 to 213,000. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected the number of new jobless claims to rise to 220,000 last week.
The dollar index rose after the data were released. U.S. Treasury bond yields rose sharply, while U.S. stocks rose and fell.
Last week's initial unemployment claims were recorded during the survey period of the non-farm payroll portion of the January non-farm employment report.
Initial claims for unemployment benefits fell by 4,000 during the survey period from December to January this year, although this meant that employment market conditions had barely changed since December, when 312,000 jobs were created, the longest government shutdown in U.S. history increased the risk of job losses.
Last Friday, about 800,000 government workers were unpaid for the first time because some governments closed down. Some of the closures began on December 22, when President Trump asked Congress to give him $5.7 billion this year to help him build a high wall on the border between the United States and Mexico.
