Their crises will make it difficult for several world leaders to attend next week's annual World Economic Forum in Davos. The background of this forum is the growing pessimism about the global economic and political prospects.
Trade disputes, tense international relations, Britain's withdrawal from Europe, and some fears of a slowdown in growth that could plunge the world economy into recession are all worrisome, and this sentiment is bound to dominate the Davos Forum on January 22-25.
The World Economic Forum's own "Global Risk Report" set the tone this week, strongly warning of impending economic headwinds, partly due to geopolitical tensions between major powers.
About 3,000 business, government and civil society activists will gather in the ski resort of Davos, but only three of the seven most industrialized countries will be represented by their leaders: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Chancellor Konte.
Trump was absent from the Davos Forum this year because of a partial shutdown of the US government. Last year, he attended the forum as an incumbent U.S. president, and became the focus of attention.
White House spokesman Thomas Sanders issued a statement Thursday that President Trump cancelled the U.S. delegation's trip to Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum next week due to the partial closure of the U.S. government. According to two senior government officials, Treasury Secretary Nuchin and Secretary of State Pompeo were expected to lead the U.S. delegation.
