It has begun to drag down global growth and hurt Japanese companies, especially those doing business in China. This makes business investment cautious. Before the beginning of the trade war last year, corporate investment had been a bright spot in Japan's economy.
"We are affected by trade frictions between the United States and China, so we will restrain capital investment before the outlook becomes clear," a manager of a mechanical company interviewed wrote in a January 7-16 survey.
"Global economic uncertainty has led some Japanese companies to hesitate to invest actively," wrote the manager of another mechanic.
About 52% of respondents said their capital expenditure in the next fiscal year would not change compared with the current fiscal year, and 12% said they would cut capital expenditure. Twenty-two percent of respondents planned to increase capital expenditure, while 14 percent said they would increase expenditure, but only slightly.
Nikkei Research interviewed 480 large and medium-sized companies for the Reuters monthly business survey, and managers answered questions anonymously. About 250 of them answered questions about capital expenditure and trade.
** Capital expenditure reversal**
According to the Bank of Japan's short-term survey in December, large companies said they had planned to increase their investment by an average of 14.3% in the fiscal year ending March, the highest level since 1990.
But since then trade frictions have disrupted global supply chains, raising fears that they will have a huge impact on global trade, investment and financial markets this year.
