The United States accused Meng of misrepresenting Huawei's relationship with a company that tried to sell equipment to Iran in defiance of U.S. sanctions. Meng's arrest worsened relations between Canada and China, which subsequently arrested two Canadian citizens and sentenced another Canadian to death.
The announcement came a day after the Canadian ambassador to the United States, in an interview with newspapers, said the Canadian government had been told that the United States would advance its formal request for extradition.
"We will continue to seek the extradition of the defendant, Meng Wanzhou, and will abide by all the deadlines stipulated in the extradition treaty between the United States and Canada," Marc Raimondi, spokesman for the U.S. Department of Justice, said in a statement. "We highly appreciate Canada's continued support for the joint law enforcement efforts of the two countries."
