Soren Skou, chief executive of Maersk Group (MAERSKb. CO), a shipping giant, said Thursday that major U.S. importers rushed to import Chinese goods in the fourth quarter before new import tariffs, one of the focus of the Sino-U.S. trade war, came into effect.
"It is very obvious that the United States imported a large number of products from China in the fourth quarter, while its exports to China declined. So that's quite the opposite of what the U.S. government wants, "Skou said in an interview.
Maersk is the world's largest container (container) shipping company with about 750 vessels.
Skou said that as the Lunar New Year is approaching on February 5, it is now in the peak season of container shipping. But freight volumes surged at the end of last year and may slow down after the current peak period.
"Container shipping grew by 4% in 2018, slightly higher than the global economic growth rate. So we can't say that we see any real negative impact from Sino-US trade disputes, "Skou said.
Maersk warned last November that trade tensions and their effects could lead to a 0.5-2% decline in global maritime trade between 2019 and 2020.
"If the deterioration of Sino-US relations is very serious, the trade war will probably have such a degree of impact on global trade," he said.
