Singapore received a record 18.5 million visitors last year as more and more visitors arrived in the city-state from top markets such as China and India, but their consumption growth slowed as they cut back on shopping, data showed Wednesday.
According to preliminary estimates, tourism revenue increased by 1% to S$27.1 billion ($20 billion) in 2018. This is 4% slower than the previous year, because tourists buy fewer gifts and souvenirs.
Singapore Tourism Bureau (STB) said that the number of Singapore tourists in 2018 increased by 6.2% compared with the same period last year. Entry from China, the largest market, increased by 6% to 3.4 million, while the number from India, another major market, increased by 13% to 1.4 million.
