The United States and China will continue trade talks in Washington, D.C., and the two sides have a pressing time to ease the trade war, but President Trump reiterated on Friday that he may extend the deadline for a trade agreement with China on March 1 while keeping current tariffs unchanged.
Both the United States and China indicated that progress had been made in the five-day trade negotiations held in Beijing.
Trump told a White House press conference that the United States was closer than ever to a "trade agreement" with China, and he said he would be "honoured" to cancel tariffs if an agreement could be reached.
But he added that the negotiations were "very complex".
White House spokesman Sanders said in a statement Friday that the United States and China "will continue to discuss all outstanding issues before the March 1, 2019 deadline."
"These detailed and in-depth discussions have contributed to progress between the two sides. But there is still a lot of work to do, "Sanders said of the Beijing talks.
She also indicated that the two countries agreed to state any commitments they had made in the memorandum of understanding. A White House source said that the Washington talks would be led by Vice Premier Liu He of China and U.S. Trade Representative Lettershire, respectively.
Failure to reach an agreement before March 1 will raise the US tariff on $200 billion of Chinese imports from 10% to 25%.
