Indonesia's two presidential candidates have pledged to achieve energy self-sufficiency by increasing the use of bio-energy, especially the push of palm oil, in order to reduce expensive oil imports from Southeast Asia's largest economy.
Indonesia, the world's largest producer of palm oil, has been promoting the inclusion of biodiesel in all diesel fuels used in the country to increase palm oil consumption, reduce fuel imports and narrow the current account gap.
In the televised election debate, President Joko Widodo said that if he wins his second term, the government plans to implement the B100 plan, which refers to fuel made entirely from palm oil, and mandatory use of biodiesel (B20), which contains 20% biodiesel, after last year.
"We hope that 30% of the total palm production will be used for biofuels. "The plan is clear, so we will not rely on imported oil," Widodo said, adding that Indonesia's palm oil production has reached 46 million tons a year.
