The U.S. auto industry on Monday called on President Trump not to impose high tariffs on imported cars and auto parts. Earlier, the U.S. Department of Commerce submitted a confidential report to the White House late Sunday night, in which it recommended how to deal with it.
Some industry organizations have also criticized the Ministry of Commerce for not publishing the details of the "232 clause" national security investigation report, which made it difficult for the automotive industry to respond during Trump's 90-day review of the report.
"Confidentiality around this report will only exacerbate the industry's uncertainty and concern about tariff risks," a statement by the Association of Automobile and Equipment Manufacturers said it was "panicked".
"It is vital that we have an opportunity for the industry to review the report's recommendations and make tariff proposals to the White House. If the report does recommend tariffs, jobs will be at risk, consumers will be hit, and investment in the United States will be reduced, which may put us back decades."
Representatives of the White House and the Department of Commerce could not be immediately reached for comment.
