The top diplomat of the Chinese government told the visiting delegation that the United States should respect China's right to development and prosperity, and reiterated that China's opening to the outside world will be wider.
Two of the world's largest economies began the latest round of trade talks this week to resolve fierce disputes over import tariffs imposed on the other side.
The United States has accused China of unfair trade practices, including compulsory technology transfer, and denials.
State Councilor Wang Yi told a delegation of American business leaders and former officials in Beijing on Tuesday that respect and cooperation are the right choice for the two countries, and the international community hopes to see this.
"Like the United States, China has the right to development and the Chinese people have the right to live a good life," the Foreign Ministry told Wang in a statement released Wednesday.
"The United States should recognize that China's development is in the interests of the world and the United States as well. Wang said that only by viewing China's development as an opportunity for the United States can certain problems be solved, including trade and economic problems.
He added that China's reform and opening-up steps are in line with its development needs, and that the door to opening up will become wider and wider, repeating previous government commitments.
"As long as China and the United States meet on their own initiative, economic and trade cooperation will still serve as a pressure on Sino-US relations," he said.
