According to a letter sent to her family Tuesday by ITV News, Shamima Begum was a young girl who left London at the age of 15 and joined the Islamic State in Syria. Her British citizenship was revoked.
Earlier this week, journalists from the London Times found Begum, who gave birth to a son over the weekend, in a refugee camp in Syria. Now 19, she told reporters that she wanted to return to Britain.
In a letter to Begum's mother, she said, "Please consult the documents relating to the decision taken by the Home Secretary to deprive your daughter Shamima Begum of her British citizenship.
"In view of your daughter's situation, the Home Secretary's decision has been served today (February 19) and the order to cancel her British citizenship has been cancelled."
The Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, said he would "not hesitate" to prevent anyone supporting terrorist organizations from returning to Britain.
Mohammed T. Akunjee, a lawyer representing the Begum family, tweeted that his family was "very disappointed" with the move.
