Uganda's ruling Executive Committee of the National Resistance Movement has supported President Yoweri Museveni as his candidate for the next presidential election, which expires in 2021 and may extend his term to 40 years.
Museveni, 74, has been in power for five years since 1986, making him one of Africa's longest-serving leaders. "Museveni will be our presidential candidate. "He's very popular," NRM spokesman Rogers Mulindwa said at the end of a five-day committee meeting Monday evening.
It is now decided to formally confirm the membership of the Party.
Opposition and rights groups said that Museveni maintained control of power through election fraud, violent repression of the opposition, repression of dissent and clever choice of some opponents.
His supporters deny this statement and say he is still popular because of economic expansion, political stability and infrastructure under his rule.
In 2017, the ruling Party-controlled parliament voted to abolish the 75-year-old age cap for the presidency, which would prevent him from standing up again. This is the second time that Parliament has amended the law in preparation for its expansion.
