Britain and the European Union played down the possibility of an immediate withdrawal agreement on Thursday, but diplomats said the two sides were moving closer to reaching a legal compromise. British Prime Minister Theresa May hopes to reach a compromise to persuade the British Parliament to support the withdrawal agreement.
Before submitting to Parliament for a vote again, Teresa May is working hard to amend the withdrawal agreement. If she fails to do so, she will have to decide whether to postpone withdrawal or leave the EU on March 29 as planned without an agreement.
Philip Hammond, Britain's Chancellor of the exchequer, has raised hopes that the EU and Britain may reach a consensus on the amendment. He said the British Parliament could have a chance to vote on the revised agreement as soon as next week.
Hours after he said that, however, an anonymous source from the British government lowered the possibility.
"It feels like we won't reach an agreement next week," the source said.
Teresa May's biggest problem is the Irish safeguard clause, which guarantees the opening of the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, a member of the European Union, while the trade agreement has not yet been finalized after Britain's separation from Europe.
