United Nations human rights experts have urged Indonesia to investigate allegations of violence by Papua police and the military because of a video showing police using live snakes to intimidate suspects during interrogation.
Reports of human rights violations by security forces often flow from the eastern most part of Papua, a place where separatist movements have been brewing for decades.
In 1969, after widespread criticism of the United Nations-supported referendum, the former Dutch colony, New Guinea's resource-rich western region, was incorporated into Indonesia.
"We urge the government to take urgent measures to prevent excessive use of force by police and officers involved in law enforcement in Papua," the experts said.
