Video clips taken on a sparse roof that looks like a low-rise apartment building show a young Indian man staggering to say a song in praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He described himself as a proud Indian with an online identity of "garry tomar", wearing ear tacks and displaying a beaded necklace in a 15-second clip under a partially unraveled shirt.
"Modi beat everybody alone... Modi was a storm, you know now," the Hindi song was released on the Chinese video mobile application TikTok, the latest digital platform for capturing Indian towns and villages. Elections expire in May. (bit.ly/2E3v0cv)
TikTok was created by Beijing Bytedance Technology Co., one of the world's most valuable start-ups, to create and share short video effects. It has become very popular in rural India, where most of the country's 1.3 billion people live.
