India and Pakistan both claimed Wednesday to shoot down their fighter planes, and Pakistan captured an Indian pilot. India's first cross-border air strikes on targets in Pakistan since the 1971 Indian-Pakistani war were carried out the day before. Global powers urge both sides to exercise restraint.
Both countries have launched air strikes in the past two days, the first such action by two nuclear-weapon States in history, while ground forces on both sides have exchanged fire at more than a dozen locations.
At least 40 Indian military and police officers were killed in a suicide car bomb attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir on February 14, and the situation in the region has been very tense since then. Radicals based in Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack. After India launched a cross-border air strike on Tuesday, the risk of conflict between the two sides rose sharply. India calls its air strike a militant training camp.
A top Indian government source said 300 militants were killed in Tuesday's air raid. Pakistan says no one died.
The White House condemned the escalation of the conflict and urged "both sides to take immediate action to ease the situation".
"The potential risks associated with further military action by either side are unacceptably high for India and Pakistan, their neighbours and the international community," said an official of the National Security Council. The official asked for anonymity.
Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday called for dialogue with India and hoped to "more sensibly" ease the dispute with India.
"History tells us that war is full of misjudgements. My question is, given the weapons we have, can we afford to be misjudged? "We should sit down and talk," Imran Khan said in a national television address.
