American companies installed more robots last year than ever, because cheaper, more flexible machines allowed them to cover businesses of all sizes and more corners of the economy, beyond their traditional foothold in automobile factories.
Shipments reached 28,478, up nearly 16% from 2017, according to Reuters data, which will be released Thursday by the Association for Promoting Automation, an industry organization based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Other industries are booming. Compared with the previous year, the shipments of food and consumer goods companies increased by 60%. Semiconductor and electronics factory shipments grew by more than 50%, while metal manufacturers'shipments grew by 13%.
Automation is under increasing pressure as companies seek to reduce labor costs in tight job markets. Given the Trump administration's trade war, many companies considering working abroad may find automation the best way to remain competitive, even among the more expensive American workers.
Bob Doyle, vice chairman of the Association for Advanced Automation, said that automation is going far beyond its traditional foothold in automobile assembly plants and other large manufacturers, into warehouses and small factories.
One of them is Metro Plastics Technologies Inc., a family-owned business in Noblesville, Indiana, with only 125 employees. It began making emotional rings in the 1970s. Last March, the company purchased its first robot, an automated machine that can deliver finished parts from production areas to quality inspectors. In the past, this work was done by forklift drivers.
