President Trump's trade war opened a new front Monday, and he plans to end preferential trade treatment for India, which allows India to export up to $5.6 billion of its products duty-free to the United States.
The Indian authorities played down the impact of the move, saying they had not talked about retaliatory tariffs in their negotiations with the United States, but the opposition party may use the topic to confront Prime Minister Moody before this year's general election.
Trump, vowing to reduce the U.S. trade deficit, has repeatedly called for high tariffs from India, while U.S. trade officials have said that the abolition of preferential treatment will not take effect until at least 60 days after notification to Congress and the Indian government.
In a letter to Congressional leaders, Trump said, "I took this measure because after intensive consultations between the United States and the Indian government, I decided that India had not assured the United States that it would provide fair and reasonable access to the Indian market."
