WASHINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) - U.S. fossil fuel exports, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), have expanded rapidly, leveraging trade negotiations with China, U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry said on Monday.
"It's part of the synthesis factor, maybe not the driving factor, but it's always part of the matrix." "The United States is now able to take advantage of this in very positive ways in trade negotiations," Perry told CNBC.
Asked if U.S. energy leveraged the negotiations, Perry said, "Yes, of course." He said U.S. technology in renewable energy and small modular nuclear reactors is also one of the tools Washington can use.
The United States is the fastest growing exporter of liquefied natural gas in the world, while China is the fastest growing exporter of liquefied natural gas. Natural gas combustion produces far less harmful pollution and carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas.
Although the U.S. liquefied natural gas business is booming, its exports are controlled by private companies. Perry did not explain how leverage was used, but if China or other major buyers imposed tariffs on U.S. oil or liquefied natural gas exports or energy technologies, the Trump government could extend tariffs or take other measures.
Sources revealed this month that Sinopec (0386.HK) plans to sign a 20-year LNG supply agreement with Cheniere Energy (LNG.A) once the Sino-US trade dispute is over. The deal could be worth about $16 billion.
However, the trade war led to a 20% drop in U.S. LNG shipments to China last year. Because of the mild winter climate and weak heating demand, export volume also declined.
