German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that Germany will set its own security standards for a new 5G mobile network after the United States warned that if Germany involved China Huawei in 5G network construction, it would reduce data sharing with Germany.
Merkel's conservative camp was annoyed by the warning from the United States, and some even saw it as a threat, but Germany's transatlantic coordinator stressed that Germany shared the concern of the United States about whether Huawei could meet the high security standards of 5G networks.
Merkel's comments come after Richard Grenell, the U.S. ambassador to Germany, attracted strong criticism for his handling of issues such as trade between the United States and Germany, Iran's nuclear agreement in 2015, and Russia-led Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Grenell wrote to German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier last week, saying that if Huawei participates in Germany's 5G infrastructure, security concerns will stifle intelligence sharing between Germany and the United States.
