U.S. lawmakers said Thursday that Boeing's 737 MAX 8 and 9 models will be grounded for at least a few weeks until a software upgrade completes testing and installation. Meanwhile, French officials are ready to start analysing the black boxes of the plane that crashed in Ethiopia a few days ago.
Boeing said delivery of 737 MAX aircraft manufactured at factories near Seattle had been suspended, but it continued to produce narrow-body aircraft at full speed in response to grounding in many parts of the world.
French investigators will look for clues to Sunday's air crash in Egypt. An Ethiopian Airlines plane bound for Nairobi crashed a few minutes after taking off Sunday, killing all 157 people on board, raising questions about the safety of Boeing 737 MAX 8, which also crashed in Indonesia last October.
There was a clear dispute over where the accident investigation should take place, and then flight data and cockpit recordings were sent to the Air Accident Investigation Agency of France (BEA).
BEA said that technical analysis would begin on Friday and that it might take several days to draw the first conclusions. The agency also posted photos of the damaged orange box.
Nearly 5,000 MAX aircraft have been ordered, which means that the financial impact on the industry is enormous. Moody's said the crash would not directly affect Boeing's credit rating.
